Countryside Properties PLC commissioned us to design aPhase 2 scheme adjoining one of Lord Parmerston's forts on the hill above theMedway at Rochester. The scheme comprises of 265 dwellings and 63 extra care flats. Whereas the award-winning Phase 1 followed the form of the brick underground of Napoleonic fort, Phase 2 expresses informality of development outside the fort.
Materials and some of the detailing picked up on the theme of Phase 1 but Phase 2 developed it’s own character by a series of linked green and other spaces in contrast to the linear form of Phase 1.
The triumphs of the scheme were firstly, the partnership that was developed between Countryside’s design team and the Local Authority and the manner of gaining consent with a Planning Performance Agreement.Secondly, designing the extra care facility which had a close regard for the landscape setting of this brownfield site and thirdly, the speed and care of the design.
