It was a privilege to work for The King’s School,Canterbury.
Our first projects were to create two new boarding houses on the World Heritage site, St Augustine’s Abbey, Canterbury.
The first boarding house, known as Harvey House, was designed in a traditional manner using high quality materials (flint, brick, stone and clay tiles) built on a foundation which floated over the underlying archaeology.
Grant House was on the second very constrained site and was designed some years later as a more contemporary building.
Both schemes involved very detailed negotiations to address the concerns of English Heritage, ICAMOS, the local archaeological trust, amenity societies and, of course, the Local Authority.
